What is Fighting Talk?

Fighting Talk is the newsletter for writers and communicators who care about social justice.

To create clear, compelling content that helps to tackle injustice, we’re often expected to:

  • wade through academic journals to find the latest research on inclusive language, how people read, remember and use information,

  • drink from the firehose of media about social justice issues, from anti-racism to Disability justice,

  • get lost in technical accessibility guidance (why is accessibility so…inaccessible?)

Do you have 50 spare hours a week? Even if you did, would you want to spend it like this?

I created Fighting Talk so you can hear direct from brilliant thinkers, get straight to the heart of tricky debates, and grab insights from the latest accessibility research without spending your one precious life on JSTOR.

What does Fighting Talk give you?

It’s a mixture of:

Inclusive and accessible communication guides

I write guides to social justice issues, and how you can talk inclusively about them.

I’ve covered topics like: Disability is not a dirty word, how to be more LGBTQIA+ inclusive and what simple writing is and why it matters.

Interviews

I interview brilliant thinkers who share their perspectives on writing, inclusive language, accessibility and social justice issues.

This interview with anti-racism educator Martha Awojobi is one of the most powerful and nuanced perspectives I’ve read in years.

Links and thinks

What I’ve loved this week. It’s a curated selection of content about inclusive language, social justice, accessibility, writing and whatever else is in my brain.

I’ll also be offering:

  • Ask me anything
A Q&A where paid subscribers can share a question on any aspect of inclusive language or accessibility, and I’ll give you detailed advice.

  • Discounts on events
Paid subscribers will get discounts to my workshops (starting January 2024).

If you work in content, copy or communications, your employer may be happy to pay.

I put together this template email to help you.

For just £50 a year or £4.17 a month, you can get weekly updates on all things inclusive language and accessibility.

It’s a fraction of the cost of a training course, with a lot more memes.
